Jessica and Jay are a lovely young couple who were married at Hart House on September 27th 2015. The complete photo essay and short film from their intimate and stylish wedding is coming soon, but first we want to tempt you with some of the 35mm film shots we captured using Nikon FM3 and FE2 SLRs, Ilford Delta 400 black and white and Kodak Portra 400 film stock.
Why are professional wedding photographers turning back to film? Partly it’s our desire to return to our roots as photographers, as artists. Film photography requires us to think. To shoot film in the very fast paced wedding photography environment we need to be masters of the most technical aspects of the craft.
One needs a high level of understanding shooting film as there’s no looking at the back of your camera to see how a shot came out. You’ve got to know what you’re doing. We like working to that level of discipline, because it helps keep us on top of our game as photographers.
We also love film because it’s just beautiful. Every film has a personality, a characteristic look, and we love working with our favourite film stocks such as Kodak Portra or Ilford Delta. We work to realize the potential of the film when we are shooting. Film looks can be imitated by digital technology in post, and even imitated well, but there’s something about analog photography with film that feels both magical and real.
Film lets us get our hands dirty. All of the black and white shots you see here were developed by us. Sadly, it’s no longer possible to access colour film chemistry on a small scale in Canada, so we have our colour film developed by a couple of professional labs.
Julius and I are now offering film photography add-ons to our wedding photography packages. We will shoot, develop, scan and refine a roll of 35 mm film for $220. This is a great introductory rate to film photography.
We hope you enjoy these images, and we invite you to contact us about capturing your wedding on film.
Are you a film freak? If you answered “No” just relax! You don’t need to be! That’s our job. All you need to do is to soak up the beauty… and contact us.
